  4. Create an Online Store with Shopify

Buy a Domain Name for Your Website

Buy a domain to start a website

Before you start a website, you should go buy a domain at Google Domains.

Why Google Domains? It’s much easier and they aren’t going anywhere.

Plus, in just one-click and $5 per month you can set up your own custom gmail account.

So if you need an email like [email protected] and already prefer Gmail, it’s a no-brainer.

If you are having trouble finding a great domain that is available, try using a free tool like BustAName.com

Once you have a domain and you have set up your email accounts you will be ready to connect to a web host or third-party application like Shopify.

Create a Logo for Your Website

Buy a premade logo for your website logo

If you’ve never created a logo, you might think this is a huge undertaking.

In some cases, yes, it can be difficult to land on a design that matches your vision.

Here’s the secret to creating a great logo — keep it simple.

I know you will want something “amazing” and it will have to be “perfect” — but this will become a huge barrier.

There are two paths you can take:

1. Create the Logo Yourself

This will not be an easy task depending on what you want. You will need an application like Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop. You can also use a free program like GIMP or Inkscape.

You can also find pre-made graphics and logo templates at the following websites:

  1. Creative Market
  2. Graphic River
  3. Adobe Stock
2. Hire a Logo Designer

You don’t have to pay thousands of dollars for a decent logo anymore. Most design marketplaces have become highly competitive. What this means is that the cost has also become competitive, making it much more affordable to get a custom logo designed.

Here a three places you can find designers for hire:

  1. Fiverr – Highly affordable lower quality designers.
  2. 99Designs – Hold a design competition.
  3. Upwork – Hire a design contractor to work closer on your vision.
  4. Envato Studio – Great designers for hire at affordable rates.

As far as branding goes, you should define the following for brand consistency:

  1. Font Types
  2. Color Palete
  3. Logo Options

Content Delivery Network (optional)

Before we point your domain to your server or third-party application, let’s set up a CDN.

Don’t worry, you can set up a free CloudFlare account and it’s really easy.

What are the benefits of a CDN like CloudFlare?

  1. Accelerated Performance
  2. Free One-Click SSL
  3. DDoS Protection
  4. Content Delivery Network
  5. Easy Caching Services
  6. Globally Managed DNS
  7. Firewall Security
  8. Analytics
  9. And more..

2. Update Shipping Details for Products

Do you want to use Shopify to calculate your product shipping costs?

If so, it’s pretty easy to define your shipping rules within Shopify.

Make sure you know the weight of what you will be shipping and the type of shipping method you’d like to use.

Shopify shipping package settings for starting your online store

Here’s where to set the default and dynamic shipping rules in Shopify:

  1. Click the “Settings” navigation link within the sidebar menu.
  2. Now, click the “Shipping” tab to manage how your orders are shipped.
  3. Add your “Shipping Origin” which is basically your return address.
  4. Create “Shipping Zones” under the Shipping Rates section to define where you will be shipping and the shipping costs associated with that destination.
  5. Shopify has major shipping label providers integrated like USPS, DHL and UPS. Print your shipping labels directly from Shopify and the costs will be added to your next invoice.
  6. Set default package size by adding weight and dimensions for all possible shipping options.

Now your customers will be shown accurate shipping costs! Print your shipping labels from your order details page when you have a new purchase.

3. Customize Design and Layout of Your Online Store

Click the “Online Store” link in the left sidebar to view customization options.

Before we start customizing the theme design, we need to choose the right theme.

Right now you have the default theme installed and we have two options:

  1. Use one of the free themes Shopify has to offer.
  2. Buy a theme from Themeforest or from the Shopify Theme Marketplace.

Note: The Shopify marketplace themes are highly overpriced and you can get a solid theme for $30 – $6o instead of $200 at Themeforest.

If you buy or download a theme, click the “Upload theme” button and select your zip file.

Now that we have a theme we’d like to use, make sure you are on the “Online Store” tab.

Click the top right “Customize” button to get started.

Most Shopify themes will give you the option to customize the following:

Main Sections, Layouts, General Settings, Website Colors, Typography, Language, Logo Settings, Header, Footer, Navigation, Product Pages, Blog Layout, Collections, Newsletters, and more…

4. Connect Domain to Your Shopify Store

Earlier in this guide we bought a domain from Google Domains, how can we point that domain to our new Shopify Store?

5. Connect Your Payment Processors

Now that you have a website and products added to your online store, we need to be able to accept payments.

If you don’t set up your preferred payment processor like Stripe or PayPal then Shopify Payments will be set as your default.

I recommend having multiple payment options for your customers to checkout.

Payment providers for online store

Here’s how to set up your preferred payment providers:

  1. Click the “Settings” link in the Shopify sidebar.
  2. Now, click the “Payment Providers” tab in the settings menu.
  3. Enable your Payment Providers.
6. You’re all set — go live!

You’re going to want to keep tweaking your store design and content over time. Remember, this is an iterative process but you need to launch your store to get more feedback and validation.

If you’re not happy with Shopify, you can also use the WooCommerce plugin for WordPress as well.
